Windsong’s resident editor/colorist/director of photography and 2012 employee of the year, Kyle Gentz, attended the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Here are his notable top five films from Sundance.
Toy’s House was by far my favorite movie of the trip. Witty comedy, fantastic photography and a Spielberg style adventure made this a must see movie. Nick Offerman and Moises Arias had the theater dying of laughter.
Ain’t Them Bodies Saints is a definite runner up to “Toy’s House” as far as favorites. With Oscar nominating performances from Ben Foster and Rooney Mara, this is my second must see film. The beauty of this film makes me hope I get to shoot on 35mm film some day.
Circles or Krugovi has a very interesting storytelling element. It only shows you a fragment of a life changing event that haunts the characters 12 years later. With subtle dialogue and drawn out emotional scenes, we are left to fill in the blanks which makes the film all the more engrossing. If you enjoy foreign films, I would highly recommend this film.
No seamlessly integrates real footage from Chile’s 1988 referendum with filmed footage in a way I’ve never seen before. The movie was shot on a U-Matic Tape, otherwise known as “three-quarter-inch,” to give a sense of style like it came right out of the 80s. I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys history or foreign films.
Escape From Tomorrow was the only film at Sundance this year I didn’t enjoy. However, it made it into my top five notable films for two reasons: 1. It was shot guerrilla style on a Canon 5D MKII. 2. As a technical person myself, I was really impressed with what they were able to shoot on Disney World’s property. This experimental film had some astounding obstacles that they overcame gracefully. This film will likely be an underground cult classic due to rumors floating around that Disney did not give them clearance to film on the property.
I see that Casey Afflick is in Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. He was amazing in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. I hope to see the film someday – on video, of course.
Casey Affleck was also fantastic. I heard people around Parkcity talking about how Ain’t Them Bodies Saints got distribution already. I’m sure it will hit select theaters at least in the next year.
