Intern Life Series: Being On Set

Windsong Productions producer/editor Joshua Krause was cool enough to let me help out on the set of his Germ flick, “Emerald,” last month.

While I’ve spent the last year working on photo shoots with my side-job, I was unsure about what to expect hanging out with professional filmmakers in their, uh, “natural habitat”. It was the first time I’ve really seen Krause, Kyle and some of the crew in action on set. It was eye-opening to see how dedicated and passionate these guys are about their work.

I was really flattered to get invited on set and it was a great glimpse into what I should expect as I get more involved with Windsong. Most of my duties involved running (and driving) around on set, helping the crew stay on schedule, calling in extras and just observing the process. It was a little intimidating being on a tighter schedule: we had less than one week to film and edit “Emerald” before the Germ screening.

And I must admit, you do a lot of waiting around, but it’s because there’s work to be done on set and there’s plenty of trial and error. You’re waiting to set up a shot. You’re waiting while re-taking shots until they’re perfected. Sometimes you’re waiting for obnoxious truck drivers to drive away and stop honking their horns so you can get another shot. It’s all a test of patience. Once the cameras start rolling, it’s luck if you get a perfect shot in the first take.

The most important thing I take away from this experience, that actually runs through the heart of our work at Windsong, is that teamwork is the most vital component to our projects.

As one of the guys said, “We’re all there to service the story, not the other way around.”

Over-inflated egos don’t mesh well here, and while patience may begin to run dry, not a single person was less than supportive of the project. I’m way more fascinated by field work now, thanks to another kick-ass, unique opportunity from the Windsong crew.

The final product from our cast and crew was awesome. If you haven’t checked out “Emerald Part I” and “Emerald Part II” yet, check them out below. The next Germ is in October, so there’s plenty of time for all of you to get involved too!
