Michaels had an idea for its Tech Week promotion: Use craft technology to create videos that show how do-it-yourself projects can be easy for people at home — and theme it for the holiday season.
They asked Windsong to make it happen.
Part of the task was creating DIY crafts using Circuit and Siser technology, but finding someone locally on short notice who could use those machines was difficult. That meant Sara (one of our partners and head of production) and I needed a crash course on these machines!
First, Michaels let us roam their aisles before they opened one morning. But because Cricut and Siser products are so popular, some of what we needed was hard to find. It ended up being a treasure hunt across California, but we had a great time with it.
Then came the actual DIY part. Eeeeek!
Sara and I did our best to channel our inner Martha Stewarts, but I’ll be honest — there were some epic fails! But eventually we figured it out and were able to make our own shirts, holiday cards and tree ornaments!
Oh! And because our hand model would have to do some crafting on camera, my very own hands became the stars of the screen! Thank goodness for good nail beds and my willpower to not eat BBQ before we filmed.
The videos hit the mark for Michaels thanks to our director of photography, Grant, and Sara and Marianna (one of Windsong’s editors) directing. They were engaging, easy to understand and perfect for Michaels holiday DIY promotions!
